One Piece: 10 Things You Should Know About Blackbeard

Marshall D Teach is the Admiral of the Blackbeard Pirates, where he commands his pirate fleet from his flagship, the Saber of Xebec. Blackbeard was depicted as a lonely child and that loneliness he endured in his young years deeply scarred him. Determined not to stop by life's circumstances, Blackbeard hatched a plan to remove himself from obscure beginnings and one day turn himself into one of the most dangerous men on the planet.

Though it's not yet stated, it us pretty clear that Blackbeard had access to one of the numerous devil fruit encyclopedias and he used this to amass knowledge on different devil fruits, which would later greatly aid his rise to power.

10 XEBEC'S  HEIR

So far in the story, a relationship between the character Marshall D Teach and Rock D Xebec has not been confirmed, but the similarities between the characters has sparked debates within the One Piece community. Much like Xebec, Blackbeard goes about acquiring power in the most chaotic way possible and he seeks only the strongest people to join his crew.

Another similarity between the two is the fact that they both chose to use the Pirate Island Beehive as their base for accumulating power. Blackbeard sails a ship known as the Saber of Xebec and intends to reduce the world to nothing, before shaping it in his image, much like Rocks D Xebec who dreamed of being the World King.

9 DREAMER

The pirates of the One Piece world can be subdivided into two categories: the dreamers and the pragmatists. The dreamers are the pirates who wait on the Dawn of the New Age; a time when the world will undergo rapid change and be born anew.

While the pragmatists believe that pirates should give up on dreams on grand adventures like searching for One Piece. Blackbeard is a fervent dreamer who believes in the existence of One Piece, and a man who champions others to follow their dreams, no matter the path it takes to get to them.

8 YONKO PATHWAY

After defeating Marco the Phoenix and the remnant of the Whitebeard Pirates during the Payback War, Blackbeard amassed a bounty of over two billion berries and was, thereafter, given the position of Yonko to match with the power and territory he's amassed since the death of Whitebeard.

Breaking out and recruiting criminals from Level 6 of Impel Down, defeating Fire Fist Ace, Killing Whitebeard, wounding Shanks and obtaining the power of multiple devil fruits are among his greatest achievements so far.

7 A-TYPICAL BODY STRUCTURE

Not much has been clarified as to how Blackbeard's body is different from that of a normal human being, but it was heavily implied by Marco the Phoenix that his body being was indeed 'different' from that of a normal human in One Piece.

This body structure allowed him to quire both the powers of the Darkness Devil fruit, as well as the Quake-Quake fruit. With these powers at his disposal, Blackbeard could easily destroy the world if he truly wills it.

6 WHITEBEARD'S FINAL WORDS

If one takes into account the final words of Whitebeard, then it becomes apparent that, despite all the power and strength Blackbeard has amassed, he will still not become Pirate King. This is due to Whitebeard not believing that Teach could be the man that Roger left One Piece for.

A major theme in One Piece is inherited will, and it seems that Whitebeard believes the man that will one-day eclipse Roger has to be someone who carries his will. After assessing Blackbeard's personality, Whitebeard was convinced it could never be Teach.

5 A-TYPICAL D

Members of the family of D are, thought to often share very familiar characteristics. This is believed to be due to them all being descendants of an ancient civilization. Throughout time, even though this civilization was displaced, it still produced people determined to discover the truth of the world.

These people often bore the secret name of D and have always been known to cause trouble for the World Government. In that vein, Teach is very much a member of the family of D but, unlike the other members, at times, he's been shown to be frighteningly fearful of death, leading some to believe that he may be a fake.

4 CREW BUILDING STRATEGY

When building the Blackbeard Pirates, Teach first recruited men he knew he'd be able to trust to carry out the formative parts of his plan and, in this time, he gathered loyal members such as Jesus Burgess, Laffitte, Doc Q and Van Auger. After gathering these trusted allies, Blackbeard then broadened his scope and turned his eye at some of the most dangerous pirates ever, the inmates on Level 6 of Impel Down.

There, he recruited strong crew members such as Shiryu, Sanjuan Wolf and Catarina Devon, who all greatly aided him in his ascension. Blackbeard's recruitment policy seems to be solely based on how powerful a prospective crewmate is and how he could use that strength to aid his own ambitions.

3 PLANNING

Blackbeard is a careful planner who was willing to follow his plans for decades without giving upon them. A young Blackbeard somehow came across information regarding the Dark-Dark devil fruit and determined that it was going to be the fruit that would one day lead him towards his dreams.

To increase his probability of finding this fruit, Blackbeard joined Whitebeard's ship and, after decades, he finally came across the fruit after his crewmate, Thatch, found it. To obtain this fruit, Teach murdered Thatch before fleeing the crew. This was step one in Blackbeard's plan and, since then, almost all the major events in One Piece has aided Blackbeard due to his continued skilfull planning.

2 POST TIME SKIP

Since the two-year time skip, the Blackbeard Pirates have been very active, aggressively expanding their territories as well as carrying out a calculated hunt on powerful devil fruit users. For this plan, Teach hunts down strong fruit users. Sometimes, he offers them a position amongst his crew and, at other times, he simply kills the fruit user and gives the devil fruit to an existing member of his crew.

Another main priority of the Blackbeard crew since the time skip has been the recruitment of strong members, such as when Blackbeard allied himself with Kuzan and, very recently, it was implied he might try recruiting former members of the 7 Warlord after the government revoked their titles.

1 MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES

A major theory that has been floating around the One Piece community is that Blackbeard might have several personalities. This is an interesting idea and Blackbeard's behavior does tend to play into this theory. Blackbeard is a dynamic character and his behavior can greatly vary from second to second.

One moment, Blackbeard comes off as a brave and intelligent strategist and the next moment, he behaves like a nincompoop, endangering his own life. Though nothing has yet to be proven or disproven, this theory is interesting and might not be far off the mark.
