One Piece: 10 More Plot Twists No One Saw Coming

23 years’ worth of content is nothing to scoff at. In that time, One Piece gave us more content than one could keep up with. New characters, new places, and loads upon loads of exciting plot twists. You’d think that, after getting bamboozled tens, if not hundreds of times, fans would get used to these One Piece plot twists—but no! Each plot twist unveiled is bolder and wilder than the one prior to it. They just kept coming, and we keep falling for it.

If we were to cover each and every plot twist featured in One Piece, we would surely run out of words before we could cover all of them. Having said so, we can highlight a few ones that left a lasting impression on every fan.

10 Duval

The sequence of events that transpired following the reveal of Sanji’s first bounty was unimaginably hilarious. More particularly, Sanji was complaining about his wanted poster was what put a smile on our faces.

As if that wasn’t funny enough, Duval, a man uncannily similar to Sanji’s misdrawn poster, popped out of seemingly nowhere and had a confrontation with Sanji. Needless to say, the inevitable meeting between the two unlucky souls was one to admire.

9 Robin Joins The Crew, Twice!

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Robin joining the Straw Hat crew not only once, but twice was an event that took us by surprise. Just who would’ve thought that a major antagonist in the previous arc would join the crew in the very next one?

That being said, Robin’s character arc still remains one of the most iconic in the series. Those with character arcs that could compete with hers are few and far between.

8 Kuzan Saves Smoker

Kuzan’s first debut following the time skip was a completely unexpected one. Just when the lives of Smoker and his division were about to be reaped by the flamboyant Heavenly Demon himself, he showed up and saved the day.

It was also during that encounter that we knew of Kuzan’s potential connections with the Blackbeard Pirates, as well as a sneak peek to Doflamingo’s power level.

7 The Identity Of Mother Carmel

Mother Carmel was the caretaker of the Sheep’s House orphanage, as well as Big Mom’s closest resemblance to a mother figure. However, behind her gentle and caring facade, Mother Carmel hid an unspeakable secret: she was a certified child trafficker with a huge reputation in the underworld.

From Big Mom’s deep affection toward her, we naturally assumed that Mother Carmel was an angelic figure. And, boy, oh boy, were we wrong!

6 Pudding's Betrayal

Pudding infiltrating the ranks of the Straw Hats proves just how badly we’ve underestimated Big Mom and her crew. She won the Straw Hats’ trust—and ours, too, for that matter—and drove them straight to their imminent doom. Another plot twist regarding Pudding was her mess up during the wedding ceremony. It took Sanji but a sentence to breach all her defenses.

5 Kanjuro

The world of One Piece is one riddled with betrayals; it’s a pirate world, after all. But, having said so, no one would expect a samurai, the epitome of loyalty, to commit a shameful act such as betrayal—at least, not one we were fairly acquainted with.

To lump the betrayal of Kanjuro with other generic plot twists would be doing the act a disservice. We were all victims of his expert-level acting.

4 Sabo Is Alive

During the flashbacks following the Marineford arc, Sabo was pronounced dead, and we all bought right into it. His life and death remained in the back of our heads until Dressrosa. He appeared out of absolutely nowhere and claimed Ace’s devil fruit. Sabo’s uncanny return highlights Oda’s genius. He returned just at the right time to carry on Ace’s legacy.

3 Luffy's Grandfather Is A Marine

Apples don’t fall far away from the tree, and, with that in mind, no one would’ve been surprised if Luffy’s grandfather turned out to be some sort of legendary big-name pirate. But a legendary Marine? Everyone would’ve called BS prior to the introduction of Garp.

Moreso, alongside Garp, came some information regarding Luffy’s father, Monkey D. Dragon. It’s up to you to decide which of the two family members’ identities is the most shocking.

2 Shanks Stops The War

The Marineford arc went down as one of the most iconic arcs in the series. The arc itself was riddled with enough plot twists that left everyone on the edge of their seats, it was that phenomenal.

While the death of Ace and the unveiling of his origins were the most prominent plot twists during that arc, the appearance of Shanks can not be ignored either. Just the sheer badassery of the aforementioned sequence is enough to garner this moment a mention.

1 Kaido And Orochi

Straight off the bat, Kaido beheading Orochi left just about everyone’s jaw nailed to the floor. Watching Kaido getting rid of Orochi after a two-decades-long alliance was staggering, to say the least. More so, for a man who betrayed his way to his shogun position, Orochi’s death was quite ironic—if he was really dead at all.
