One Piece: The 5 Best Character Costumes (& 5 Worst)

When an anime goes on as long as One Piece has, the characters are bound to undergo some visual changes.

This keeps them visually fresh and can provide a noted change when they enter a new arc or area. While some of these costumes are impressive and fit the character perfectly, others can fall short or make the character look like a complete idiot. This doesn't just apply to the protagonists, as sometimes even the side characters can either steal the show or give a fashion designer a heart attack. Here are some of the best costumes worn in One Piece, and some that really never should have seen the light of day.

10 Best: Mafia Luffy (Whole Cake Island Arc)

As the protagonist of the whole series, Luffy has undergone many outfit swaps throughout the series. He tends to dress very casually, so his meeting with Capone Bege is one of the first time viewers get to see him dressed nicely. The full red suit matches well with the black undershirt, and the dash of pink brings the outfit together perfectly. Just to stay true to himself, Luffy opts to put the fancy black mafia hat firmly over his famous straw hat instead of swapping them. Easily his best look in the series.

9 Worst: Bon Clay (Alabasta Arc)

Bon Clay is one of the only characters who actually visually looks better in prisoner's stripes. There are plenty of flamboyant characters in One Piece, but few display it like Bon Clay. Not even counting the swan heads and wings, the outfit itself is a nightmare. The pink and blue don't mesh well together, and the blue puffy waist piece he wears adds unnecessary volume to the look. While this outfit may fit Bon Clay's personality perfectly, it is without a doubt one of the worst eyesores in the series.

8 Best: Samurai Zoro (Wano Kuni Arc)

The Straw Hats have had to change their appearances to fit in before, but the Wano Kuni arc has them fully disguising themselves to infiltrate the country. Out of all of them, Zoro's costume change is one that almost suits him more than his usual look. He looks like a true samurai, with his traditional green color being shown on the cloth draped over his shoulders. While some of the other Straw Hats had some solid changes during this arc, Zoro is the only one who was able to turn his fighting style into the perfect disguise.

7 Worst: Senor Pink (Dressrosa Arc)

Senor Pink has one of the most jarring costumes in One Piece. While his reasons for dressing like this are fairly depressing, that doesn't change the fact that this is a horrible looking costume. Not only do the colors not mesh well with each other, but the clothing choices alone are hard to look at. A sumo diaper covered in stars, a bonnet, and a  pacifier just makes for a terrible combo. Thankfully when he used his ability to swim through the ground, he couldn't really be seen.

6 Best: Edward Newgate (Marineford Arc)

Edward Newgate, or Whitebeard, was the world's strongest man until his death. That strength that he was known for was captured perfectly with his outfit. His boots, pants, and waist sash give off an appropriate pirate vibe, while his lack of shirt shows off the powerful muscles and scars that define his strength. The part of the costume that brings everything together is the jacket that he wears on his shoulders. One Piece viewers see similar garbs on the Marine Admirals and associate it with power and strength. Giving Whitebeard his own version of this makes his outfit one of the best and most appropriate in the series.

5 Worst: Warlord Buggy (Post Timeskip)

Buggy the Clown is one of the recurring side characters that has gone through several wardrobe changes throughout One Piece. Becoming a warlord after the timeskip is clearly the worst thing that could have happened to his fashion sense.

His entire outfit is just a massive piece of red fabric, which he uses his ability to fill out. This display is supposed to make him appear larger and more imposing, but the saying 'bigger is not always better' definitely applies here. No one with actual strength or power would be swayed by this horrible costume.

4 Best: Miss All Sunday (Alabasta Arc)

Before Nico Robin joined the Straw Hats, she fought against them as Miss All Sunday.

Nico Robin is consistently one of the most fashionable Straw Hats, but her outfit in the Alabasta arc was by far her best. The deep purple skirt and corset match her personality at the time, while the pristine white fur overcoat and cowgirl hat give her a feeling of being untouchable. Considering how she fights, this outfit fits her perfectly. Not to mention it just looks incredibly stylish.

3 Worst: Franky (Dressrosa Arc)

Franky has consistently shown that he has the worst fashion sense out of the Straw Hats. To be fair he also has a very difficult body type to work with, but he just doesn't seem to care either way. The blue braids and white beard is already a strange combination, but then after dressing up his top half in a nice suit he leaves the bottom half bare! Red underwear just doesn't match the ensemble, and no one is going to be fooled by a disguise this slapped together. Franky was truly scraping the bottom of the barrel on this one.

2 Best: Dracule Mihawk (Marineford Arc)

Dracule Mihawk's costume just embodies the character perfectly. He's dark and brooding with a big vampire hunter vibe going on. The overall dark colors of his outfit match this, and the cross necklace he wears gives further credence to the vampire hunter. Being potentially the best swordsman in the One Piece universe, a bit of flair and danger is expected from him. His billowing cloak and fancy feathered hat add just enough to complete the look without taking away from the dark theme. An outfit perfect for the character wearing it.

1 Worst: Saint Charlos (Sabaody Archipelago Arc)

All of the World Nobles dress like this, but Saint Charlos is easily the most prominent among them. They are haughty to the extreme, and this is essentially a space suit that they wear to avoid breathing the same air as non-nobles. This type of costume clashes horribly with every other type in One Piece and just looks plain weird. Between the vertical belt thing and the random doughnuts glued to the suit, this couldn't look goofier if it tried. The World Nobles look like idiots prancing around in these, but maybe that's the point.
