One Piece: 5 Times We Hated Luffy (& 5 Times We Loved Him)

One Piece is the most popular anime series in the world. It boasts of a huge fanbase, and nothing compares to it. The main character of the series is Monkey D. Luffy, a boy who sets out to become the Pirate King. He has big goals, but he's ready to put everything on the line to achieve them.

It is almost impossible to dislike Luffy, as he rarely puts a foot wrong. Most of the time, he makes the right decision and wins the fans over. However, sometimes, he too can make an error. It is very rare, but Luffy's managed to get on the nerves of at least a few fans in the past.

10 Hated: Underestimated Caesar

When the Straw Hats arrived at Punk Hazard, they faced a new challenge in the form of Caesar Clown. The Straw Hats were barely tested at Fish-Man Island, all of them managed to win without any difficulties.

The crew was on its toes when they arrived at Punk Hazard. Luffy had grown complacent, and he felt that Caesar would pose no threat to him. His complacency cost him, as he was beaten and imprisoned by Caesar for a while. Zoro had warned his captain that things would be very difficult in the New World and still Luffy overlooked the warning.

9 Loved: Punched A Celestial Dragon

Luffy absolutely adores his friends, and he is willing to go to any lengths to save them. During the Sabaody Archipelago arc, Hachi was shot by a Celestial Dragon. This infuriated Luffy; he had only one thing in mind, and it was to make the Celestial Dragon pay for what he did.

The slow walk up the stairs will always be iconic, and the punch to the face of the Celestial Dragon left the fans flabbergasted. Luffy perfectly knew about the consequences, but he wasn't gonna let anyone who hurt his friend leave so easily.

8 Hated: Released Prisoners From Impel Down

Luffy was separated from his crew by Bartholomew Kuma, and he was sent to Amazon Lily. At Amazon Lily, Luffy came to know about Ace's execution, only one thought came to his mind, and that was to save Ace. With some help from Boa Hancock, Luffy successfully invaded Impel Down.

The journey to Impel Down proved to be fruitless, as Ace was taken to Marineford before Luffy could reach him. Luffy freed all the dangerous prisoners which would serious repercussions.

7 Loved: Saved Ace

After learning about Ace's execution, Luffy only wanted to save his older brother at any cost. In order to save Ace, first, Luffy invaded Impel Down and defeated Magellan along the way. Then, Luffy arrived at Marineford with the Impel Down escapees.

Luffy challenged the Navy, and, minutes after his arrival, he became the focal point of the war. It is fair to say that, without Luffy's assistance, the Whitebeard Pirates wouldn't have managed to rescue Ace.

6 Hated: Fought Against Zoro

Luffy is the closest thing to the perfect main character, but, sometimes, he too can make the wrong decisions. At Whiskey Peak, Luffy and Zoro got into a fight because of a misunderstanding. Luffy wasn't ready to hear Zoro's side, which led to the two of them getting into a fight.

It was painful seeing two close friends having a go at each other, and, what's more, the entire situation could have been easily avoided had Luffy listened to what Zoro wanted to say.

5 Loved: Challenged The World Government

When Robin was taken away by CP-9, there was only one thing that the crew was going to do and that was to save her. Luffy was determined to save Robin at all costs. When the crew arrived at Enies Lobby, Luffy called out to Robin and asked what her decision really was.

After he heard what he needed to hear, Luffy asked Sogeking to shoot down the flag of the World Government. By shooting down the flag of the World Government, Luffy declared war against them. This was another instance where Luffy showed how much he loves his friends.

4 Hated: Got Caught Underwater

The Arlong Park arc is one of the best arcs in One Piece. The arc was focused on Nami, and it included her backstory. When the truth about Nami's grim past reached Luffy, he immediately set out to fight Arlong. Luffy charged into Arlong Park and shocked everyone inside. All was going well until he was caught in the concrete and then was thrown into the sea by Arlong. Luffy could've easily died if his friends weren't around to save him.

3 Loved: No Discrimination

Luffy's finest quality is that he never discriminates. He accepts people for who they are, and it doesn't matter what race or gender they belong to. Luffy has no problem with Fish-Men, and he treats them like he would treat any other human. Luffy accepted Yamato when he said that he is a man, and he also accepted O-Kiku when she said that she's a woman. He is one of the coolest guys in the anime world.

2 Hated: Ruined Law's Plan

Luffy and Law had formed an alliance all the way back at Punk Hazard to take down Kaido. Law had carefully formulated a plan which would give them the advantage against Kaido, the captain of the Animal Kingdom Pirates, and things were going well until Luffy came to Wano.

When Luffy saw that Kaido attacked the ruins of Oden Castle, he lost his cool completely and attacked Kaido. Not only did Kaido humiliate him in the fight, but Luffy was also sent to the Udon prison.

1 Loved: Conqueror's Haki Burst

The Fishman Island arc has one of the most iconic Luffy scenes of all time. In this arc, Luffy and company had to face the New Fish-Men Pirates, who were dreaming of taking over the world. The Straw Hats had to take on 100,000 fish-men and beat them in order to stop Hody. Things weren't looking good, and that's when Luffy decided to step up. He used his Conqueror's Haki and knocked out 50,000 Fish-men, which was just amazing to watch.
