The One Piece is a grand treasure that was left behind by Joy Boy on the Final Island over 800 years before the current timeline of the story. Around 25 years ago, Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King, managed to reach Laugh Tale and find this treasure. In doing so, Roger also named the island as Laugh Tale.
After the beginning of the Great Age of Pirates, people from all over the world set out to find the One Piece and become the Pirate King, just like Roger. However, only a handful of people actually have a chance of reaching Laugh Tale and finding this treasure. Which characters are the closest to the One Piece?
8 Eustass 'Captain' Kid
Kid captains the Kid Pirates and hails from South Blue. He's worth 470 million berries right now, however, the amount doesn't really do justice to the level of strength that he possesses.
Kid might not be all that close to the One Piece, however, since he's involved in the war with Kaido, he will most likely get his hands on the Road Poneglyph. In doing so, Kid would be one step closer to Laugh Tale.
7 Marshall D. Teach
Also known as Blackbeard, Marshall D. Teach is one of the Yonko, which automatically puts him in the company of the strongest pirates in the One Piece world. He aims to find the Final Island, just like Luffy, and although he doesn't have access to the Road Poneglyphs quite yet, he could get his hands on them very soon.
At the moment, Teach isn't all that close to the location of the One Piece, but being the main antagonist, that will change soon.
6 Trafalgar Law
The Surgeon of Death, Trafalgar Law is a member of the Worst Generation and he leads the Heart Pirates. Hailing from the North Blue, Law has made quite a name for himself and become one of the most fearsome pirates of this age.
Law was one of the people who got to see the Road Poneglyph at Zou, which puts him a step closer to reaching Laugh Tale. It is also highly likely that he'll get access to Kaido's Road Poneglyph once the war at Wano Country is done and dusted.
5 Kaido
One of the Four Emperors of the Sea, Kaido is the captain of the Animal Kingdom Pirates and the man known to be the strongest creature in the entire world. He's a monster in combat who is every bit as strong as people say.
At some point during his pirate life, Kaido got access to a Road Poneglyph that he keeps at Onigashima. After joining forces with Linlin, Kaido took another step closer in the directory of the One Piece. Although he is very unlikely to reach Laugh Tale, he's still one of the people closest to it at the moment.
4 Big Mom
Like Kaido, Big Mom is one of the Four Emperors of the Sea, and she leads the Big Mom Pirates. She has a bounty of 4.388 billion Berries on her head, which just goes to show how massive a threat she is to the World Government.
Big Mom is also known to be the World's Strongest Woman, which makes her worthy of being the one to find the One Piece. Right now, she has access to one Road Poneglyph that she keeps in the treasure room of Whole Cake Island and after having joined forces with Kaido, she also has access to Kaido's Road Poneglyph. The two plan on finding the One Piece together and destroying the world in the process.
3 Monkey D. Luffy
The captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy hails from East Blue and has progressed by leaps and bounds over the two years of his life as a pirate. He's an exceptionally strong character who is known as the Fifth Emperor of the Sea. Although he isn't as strong as Kaido or Big Mom, he is, in fact, closer to the One Piece than any of them.
Luffy has access to two of the four Road Poneglyphs already and after inevitably defeating Kaido, he'll have 3 of the four in his possession. Right now, Luffy is one of the people closest to the One Piece; eventually, he'll be the man to become the King of the Pirates as well.
2 Buggy
Buggy the Clown is a former Shichibukai, a sworn brother of Shanks, and a former member of the Pirate King's crew. On his journey with Roger, Buggy saw all the Road Poneglyphs and perhaps even knows where all of them point to.
Unfortunately, Buggy couldn't visit Laugh Tale with Roger, but he made a promise with Shanks to, one day, sail to Laugh Tale with him. Buggy might not be powerful, but he has the tools required to reach Laugh Tale if he joins forces with Shanks.
1 Shanks
Shanks is a Yonko of the Sea and the captain of the Red-Hair Pirates. He rose to this position around four years before Luffy's journey began. Like Buggy, Shanks was, at one point, a member of the Roger Pirates as well. He has seen all the Road Poneglyphs and knows where they point to.
Although Shanks hasn't been to Laugh Tale yet, it is possible that he will do so in the future of the story. Shanks and Buggy are two big contenders to find the One Piece, even though neither of them seems to be actively aiming for it.
