Fullmetal Alchemist: 5 One Piece Characters Scar Can Beat (& 5 He Can't)

There are few characters in Fullmetal Alchemist who are as powerful and devastating as Scar. As an early antagonist in the series, Scar is able to kill a lot of alchemists with not a lot of effort thanks to his alchemical arm, which allows him to destroy people from the inside. What’s more, Scar has trained as a warrior-monk, which has given him actual combat training.

He’s incredibly fast and agile, and he’s proven himself as a formidable opponent even without his alchemical abilities. When he’s so difficult to defeat in his one series, it’s almost hard to imagine what kind of power a One Piece character might need to have in order to meet him on the battlefield.

10 Can: Nico Robin

Nico Robin’s fighting relies on her being fast and agile and using her Devil Fruit abilities to create extra limbs that don’t even necessarily need to be attached to her person.

They can, however feel pain, no matter who they’re attached to, and Scar’s destructive power with his alchemical arm could cause immense amounts of pain to any of these limbs. This might cause enough agony to take Nico Robin down, or at least to slow her down enough for Scar to deal a final blow.

9 Can’t: Trafalgar Law

Trafalgar Law’s Devil Fruit allows him to create a sphere in which he can control anything or anybody. Scar is fast, and a great tactician, but if caught off-guard by this ability, he could very easily fall prey to it.

While Trafalgar can’t maintain this sphere for very long, he could use the time he has it wisely, in order to subdue Scar long enough to get away or even to get him to use his own arm against himself in a destructive manner.

8 Can: Usopp

Usopp’s skills lie primarily in the fact that he is an expert marksman. While he is not a particularly good fighter, and he’s often shown as a coward in the series, once in something, he’s determined to see it through.

Unfortunately, Scar’s speed and skills far surpass Usopp’s, and even his abilities to run away from and evade danger would probably be pretty well tested by Scar’s tactical brain and hand to hand combat training.

7 Can’t: Franky

Franky is cybernetically enhanced, which means that a lot of his body parts aren’t actually human; for all intents and purposes, he is a cyborg. This allows him a ton of physical strength, which would be difficult even for someone like Scar to hold his own against.

But more importantly, Scar would have a hard time knowing exactly which parts of Franky are human, which renders his alchemical arm somewhat useless, since he needs to know the makeup of a person’s body in order to destroy it, per alchemical rules.

6 Can: Monkey D. Luffy

Luffy’s skills particularly use his Devil Fruit ability to treat his body like rubber, and he’s able to twist and stretch himself into different shapes to fit his combat needs. What’s more, because rubber is malleable, he can’t take damage from direct strikes, making traditional combat difficult to pull off against him.

But Scar’s agility and speed, paired with the fact that his alchemical arm can be used to destroy a person from the inside, would definitely put Luffy at a major disadvantage in a fight.

5 Can’t: Blackbeard

It’s absolutely no secret just how strong Blackbeard is. And though Scar is a very formidable character, with almost no equals in Fullmetal Alchemist, he still pales in comparison to what Blackbeard can accomplish.

And since Blackbeard has two Devil Fruits, one which can create black holes and the other which can cause massive shockwaves, he wouldn’t even necessarily have to get close to Scar to finish him off, and would easily be able to keep him at bay with these abilities.

4 Can: Roronoa Zoro

Zoro is a pretty powerful swordsman, and he has definitely held his own against some impressive opponents in One Piece. But being a swordsman requires getting up close and personal with his enemy since he can’t really deal any damage from far away.

And as with most people who face Scar, the moment a person steps within reach of him is likely the moment they’re going to be defeated, due to the destructive power of his arm.

3 Can’t: Donquixote Doflamingo

Donquixote Doflamingo’s Devil Fruit abilities almost seem made to combat somebody like Scar. Because they allow him to create strings, which he can use either to control other people or to actually injure an enemy during combat, he never has to actually get close to Scar in order to fight him.

In fact, he could put other people in Scar’s way, forcing others to fight him instead. Scar’s sense of justice would keep him from actually killing those people, but they’d keep him busy enough for Doflamingo to stay safe.

2 Can: Sabo

Sabo is an impressive hand to hand combat specialist. He fights in the Ryusoken style, a type of combat that uses grips to overpower one’s opponent. This is similar to Scar’s use of his arm since the grip of his hand on someone’s head can be deadly to that person.

But Scar’s power isn’t just a powerful grip; it’s alchemical, which means he can make someone’s internal organs explode by touching them. Since Sabo would have to get in close to use his own skills, he’d put himself in danger.

1 Can’t: Vinsmoke Sanji

Sanji is not the most powerful member of the Straw Hat Pirates. As the chef of the crew, his main qualification for being there is cooking. But he does definitely get into the fray sometimes, and he holds his own against a lot of opponents.

When angry enough, he literally bursts into flames. Because Scar’s powers require him to touch the person, he could actually lose because of the fire, which could burn him and destroy the alchemical circle tattooed on him that makes him so dangerous, to begin with.
