When one is looking for a complex and interesting character, there aren’t many who fit the bill as well as Sanji from One Piece. He’s a chef for the Straw Hat Pirates, but he’s also a prince who was mistreated by his family. He is incredibly stoic and thoughtful, but he is also an incredible lecher who follows beautiful women around obsessively in order to flirt with them and gets angry at the idea of them paying attention to anyone else.
For cosplayers, these qualities in Sanji’s personality make him an attractive character to cosplay, and his great character design, from his well-fitted suits to his curly eyebrows.

Sanji is definitely very chivalrous, even as he is very lecherous and flirty. But he puts aside those tendencies when a woman is in trouble, no matter whether he thinks she’s beautiful, in order to help her. This cosplayer captures some of that smoldering intensity Sanji feels about protecting women from harm, particularly harm by other men. There are a lot of great details to this cosplay, including a slightly sparkly gold eyeshadow that gives him a bit of a pretty boy air.

Sanji has a very specific face shape that sets him apart somewhat from the other characters in One Piece. He’s very sharp-boned and has a long, thin nose. Some cosplayers, like this one, try to replicate this by using contouring in their makeup, as in this cosplay. Here, this cosplayer has used a darker color to highlight her cheekbones, giving her a more gaunt appearance, and creating a shadow to make her nose look thinner as well.

Fans of One Piece would probably think it pretty unusual to see Sanji not buttoned up and with his tie. He usually looks a little bit like he’s James Bond in every situation. This cosplayer has gone another direction with their cosplay, giving Sanji a more relaxed look, his shirt untucked and his collar popped, with no tie to be found. They’ve done a great job with the makeup as well, drawing on the delicate goatee that Sanji sports throughout the series.

A lot of people in One Piece carry weapons. It is, after all, a story about pirates, so it would be unusual to not see some swashbuckling throughout the series. Sanji isn’t really a warrior by trade, though he does sometimes wade into battle.

Sanji’s character design is a great one for converting it into a more traditionally feminine look, as this cosplayer has done. They haven’t gone out of their way to create a dress or do anything hyper-feminine. Instead, they have taken Sanji’s classic character design, particularly his form-fitting double-breasted suit, and created a vest out of it, along with a more feminine blouse with puffy sleeves. It’s still a suit but one that might more often be seen on a woman.

Sanji really loves women, and he can get very obsessive and doting on a woman if he feels that there’s any chance of her reciprocating his feelings (and sometimes, even if there isn’t a chance of that). Even in the Straw Hat Pirates, Sanji sometimes will only serve Nico Robin and Nami, as the women of the ship. This cosplay has captured that part of Sanji’s personality that really wants to serve the ladies. Sanji might show up as seen here, in an apron with a refreshing beverage.

Sanji doesn’t often lose his temper, but when he does, it makes him a very formidable opponent in battle. In fact, he very literally bursts into flames when his emotions get the best of him, and his flaming legs are a pretty intense weapon.
This cosplayer shows Sanji walking on his tiptoes, not with his legs flaming, but definitely reminding us of the fact that the tips of his shoes can be incredibly dangerous if he’s in the right mood.

Sanji is a character who always seems very alert and diligent, paying a lot of attention to their surroundings and noticing things that maybe other characters don’t. It makes sense that it would be difficult to really show him relaxing, even as he smokes a cigarette, because of this aspect of his personality. This cosplayer has worried that they haven’t quite achieved that look, but the pose actually seems very in character for a character who is often very focused.

Once every convention, I like to work with a photographer that I’ve never worked with before. I like to see how different people operate and to see their aesthetic. @finalgirlenergy impressed me so much. I’m sorry to say that they saw me at my worst. Not only is this Sanji cosplay quite old and in need of some repairs, but I was so exhausted, sick, and stressed that I could barely function. (I was stressed enough that I ended up in the ER the Tuesday after Katsu.) I apologized when we first met for my poor mental and physical state, and they were so kind about it. And then the shoot started and things only got better. @finalgirlenergy did such a good job directing my tired self. I’m not the strongest at posing for the camera, but they made so many good suggestions. This shoot was me on the edge of breaking and you honestly could never guess. @finalgirlenergy is truly a phenomenal artist. Sanji is probably best known for his unusual eyebrows, which are incredibly curly, much more so that most eyebrows would be in real life. Before the time jump in the series, the curl in his eyebrows was actually at the edges, but afterward, they are in the middle of his brow instead, which makes him look slightly older. This cosplayer when with this older version of Sanji in their cosplay, giving him a pensive, almost worried expression.
