Netflix's One Piece Showrunner Wants Jamie Lee Curtis for Season 2

The odds of Jamie Lee Curtis joining Netflix's One Piece series for Season 2 are looking very good.

Following the success of Season 1, it was recently announced that One Piece has been renewed for a second season on Netflix. As of now, work cannot begin on Season 2 in light of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. In the meantime, many fans have been campaigning for Curtis to play Dr. Kureha in Season 2, a fantasy casting choice that the Halloween star herself previously endorsed. With fans ramping the lobbying back up, Curtis took to Instagram to announce her intentions to join them as soon as the strikes end.

"ONCE the STRIKE against the greed of the AMTPT is SETTLED with a FAIR CONTRACT, I will lobby along with the growing fan frenzy to become Doctor Kureha in [One Piece]," Curtis said in the post. With thousands of likes, the top comment is a response from One Piece co-showrunner Matt Owens, who said, "Mommy dearest, that's why we sent you that figure! No need to lobby. Once we get what we deserve and get back to work, let's talk!"

Jamie Lee Curtis Just Might Land the Role of Dr. Kureha

With clear interest from both sides, it seems like fans have a great shot at seeing the fantasy casting happen after their longtime social media campaigning. Of course, nothing is guaranteed, and it's possible that the casting won't work out, whether that's due to scheduling conflicts or other issues. In any case, this is certainly a big step closer to making the casting happen, but it doesn't seem like anyone will know for sure until after the dust settles from the strikes ending.

Curtis' potential casting would mean an Oscar-winning actress would appear in Season 2 of One Piece. This year, Curtis won her first Academy Award based on her performance in A24's hit film Everything Everywhere All at Once. She also won a SAG Award for the same role. Last year, Curtis played her fan favorite role of Laurie Strode for the last time in Halloween Ends, and she was more recently seen in Disney's spooky comedy Haunted Mansion. Curtis can next be seen in the upcoming Borderlands movie.

The first season of the live-action One Piece series is streaming on Netflix, while there's no set release date at this time for Season 2.
