Rubber-like Properties
The most noticeable aspect of Monkey D. Luffy's body is its ability to stretch into a seemingly unlimited assortment of contorted positions. Like many of the strange powers seen throughout One Piece, this stems from Luffy's consumption of a Devil Fruit — in this case, a Devil Fruit referred to as the Gum-Gum Fruit.
Thanks to his powers of elasticity, the captain of the Straw Pirates is the human equivalent of a rubber band. Luffy can extend his limbs to extraordinary lengths, allowing him to reach far-off distances while simultaneously increasing his effective attack range. Besides his increased reach, he can generate massive of amounts of potential energy by increasing the tension in his limbs. This is a major reason why Luffy can commit feats of Herculean strength with little effort.
Natural Defensive Capabilities
Throughout his journey across the Grand Line, Monkey D. Luffy takes a tremendous amount of damage, displaying an unnatural amount of endurance compared to most pirates. However, these defensive capabilities encompass much more than simple toughness. Luffy's body is immune to blunt force thanks to his elastic body, making bullets, cannonballs, and most hand-to-hand strikes completely useless against him.
During the Skypiea Arc, Luffy even demonstrates a natural immunity to lightning, which allows him to go toe-to-toe with one of the strongest One Piece villains pre-timeskip. This trend continues into the Impel Down Arc, where the Straw Hat Pirates gains a natural immunity to poison after surviving his encounter with Impel Down's warden, Magellan. As a result, even the poison gas used by Caesar Clown at Punk Hazard isn't capable of harming Luffy, giving the Straw Hat Pirate as many natural defensive capabilities as any character in the series.
Multiple Transformations
As the Straw Hat Pirates travel through the Grand Line, they encounter some incredibly strong opponents, forcing each member of the crew to push past their limits. In Monkey D. Luffy's case, he ultimately unlocks the ability to change his body using a series of powerful transformations.
Throughout One Piece, Luffy unlocks what he describes as "Gears" — the abilities of these Gear transformations range from super speed to gigantification, giving him a versatile skill set that he can adjust to virtually any situation. Eventually, the Straw Hat Pirate combines these transformations with techniques like Haki, which results in even more notable changes to his physical form.
Armament Haki-based Techniques
Following One Piece's timeskip, Monkey D. Luffy is capable of further bolstering his offensive and defensive prowess by applying Armament Haki to various parts of his body. The Straw Hat Pirate learned this technique during his time with Silvers Rayleigh, and he refines it throughout his journey in the New World, leading to more derivations of its usage.
Although Monkey D. Luffy uses Armament Haki in each of his forms, the most obvious application of the ability occurs when he assumes his Gear 4 transformations. In these forms, the design of Luffy's body radically changes in both shape and color — which of the Gear 4 forms it takes depends largely on what the situation calls for.
Unable To Function In The Sea
Despite the tremendous power that Devil Fruits grant, consuming one comes at the cost of losing the ability to swim. Devil Fruit users become like sinking stones when submerged in water. In this regard, Monkey D. Luffy is no exception. For pirates constantly at sea, this side effect can be a nuisance — and not just in the case of ocean traversal.
Seastone is a special substance that emits the same energy as the sea, allowing even normal soldiers to immobilize Devil Fruit users. It makes various appearances throughout One Piece after being introduced by Smoker during the Loguetown Arc, and in each instance, it's a major nuisance to the Straw Hat Pirate and other Devil Fruit users. However, even when Monkey D. Luffy is affected by ocean water or the powers of Seastone, his body retains its elasticity, as evidenced when Nojiko successfully extends Luffy's neck despite his body being submerged in the Arlong Park Arc.
Two Scars On His Chest And Cheek
Since the very first episode of One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy's body has served as evidence of his commitment to become the next King of the Pirates. Underneath his left eye sits a small scar, but unlike most scars seen in the series, this wound was self-inflicted. As a child, Shanks and the Red Hair Pirates teased Luffy by saying that the young boy wasn't tough enough to be a pirate. In response, he took a blade to his face to prove them wrong. While the action was far from advisable, it's a testament to the lengths that Luffy will go in order to achieve his dreams.
During the Marineford Arc, the Straw Hat Pirate earns another scar on his body — this time at the hands of Marine Admiral Akainu. After the death of Portgas D. Ace, Luffy is completely distraught, leaving him vulnerable to a strike from the ruthless leader of the Marines. Although Jinbei successfully prevents Akainu from killing Luffy, the attack leaves One Piece's protagonist with a massive scar across his chest. Like the scar under his eye, this mark comes to represent Luffy's determination to reach the end of the Grand Line, even if it comes at the cost of his own body.
The Voice Of All Things
Monkey D. Luffy possesses a variety of rare abilities, but few are as notable as his ability to utilize the Voice of All Things. This rare trait allows its user to understand the thoughts of animals and even inanimate objects. However, unlike most of its users, Luffy is completely unaware that he has this capability.
Currently, it's unknown how One Piece characters acquire the Voice of All Things, making it impossible to determine whether the ability is intrinsic to Monkey D. Luffy's body. Regardless, it proves to be a vital tool in the Fish-Man Island and Zou Arcs, and as the series moves into its final saga, the rare ability will factor in once again.
An Impossibly High Metabolism
If there's one thing that motivates One Piece's protagonist, it's the promise of a well-cooked meal. Monkey D. Luffy isn't interested in money or worldly possessions, but anytime he's promised a feast, his eyes light up with a childlike sense of excitement.
Although Luffy's Devil Fruit and rubberlike properties explain why the Straw Hat Pirate can stomach a tremendous amount of food, they don't account for the fact he never seems to gain any weight. Admittedly, the same paradox can be observed in many well-known anime characters. Still, it's one of the strangest elements of Monkey D. Luffy's unique body.
Shortened Life Span
The life of a pirate is one of extreme danger, so it's not uncommon for a captain to risk life and limb in order to traverse the Grand Line. However, even by these standards, Monkey D. Luffy pushes his body to the extreme, and as a result, he seems to have shaved several years off his life expectancy.
On multiple occasions, Luffy accomplishes the impossible by putting his body through a horrifying amount of stress. During the Impel Down and Marineford Arcs, the Straw Hat Pirate uses Emperor Ivankov's Devil Fruit to revitalize his bod. At various points in One Piece, Luffy repeatedly transforms into his Gear 2, 3, and 4 forms to the point of exhausting his long-term vitality.
The Will Of D.
Luffy's middle initial may seem like it's more related to his parents' preference in names than his body, but in reality, it signifies one of the most important aspects of his character. The Will of D. is a unique trait that many of One Piece's most noteworthy characters possess, and it's said to denote the natural enemies of the World Nobles (also known as Celestial Dragons).
Although Monkey D. Luffy doesn't serve as part of the Revolutionary Army, he carries a rebellious spirit that naturally opposes tyrannical entities like the World Government. The Straw Hat Pirate's middle initial is a sign that this characteristic is part of his very person, and it's a major reason why he has become such a notorious figure in the Grand Line.
