Jujutsu Kaisen's Big Three Families & Their Cursed Techniques, Explained

In Jujutsu Kaisen, Sorcerer Families contain members who utilize jujutsu. For example, members of the Inumaki Family are known for their Cursed Speech technique. Sorcerer Families are highly regarded and have a prominent influence in the jujutsu world. That said, the Big Three Sorcerer Families in Jujutsu Kaisen are the Gojo, Kamo, and Zenin clans.

The trio are all descendants of the Big Three Vengeful Spirit, who were powerful jujutsu users in life —and, upon death, maintain intense cursed energy. As a result, the Vengeful Spirits' cursed techniques are passed down through each clan. Most importantly, however, the Big Three hold the largest political presence in jujutsu society.

Updated on October 24, 2023, by Ajay Aravind: When the story begins, neither Yuji Itadori nor the audience knows just how wide the world of sorcery is. Jujutsu Kaisen eventually catches everyone up to speed, although the story takes its own time to highlight various aspects. The Big Three Sorcerer Families are later revealed as major players in the game of Curse-eradication, making them foundational frameworks for the overarching narrative. As such, we've updated this feature with some more information.

Satoru Gojo Is the Only Known Member of the Gojo Clan

The Gojo Family currently consists of a sole individual: Gojo Satoru, the world's strongest jujutsu sorcerer. Very little is known about the other Gojo clan members. The Gojo Family descends from Sugawara Michizane, one of the Three Vengeful Spirits from the Heian era. Due to this ancestry, Gojo Satoru and Okkotsu Yuta are distant relatives, explaining the latter's prodigious talents. The Gojo clan members inherited cursed techniques called Limitless and the Six Eyes, which Satoru currently possesses.

Those Gojo clan members with the Limitless technique can manipulate and distort space at will, which is already overpowered without taking the abstract concept of "infinity" into account. And yet, Limitless is somehow capable of accessing and manifesting infinite space. There are two extensions to this ability, namely Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue and Cursed Technique Reversal: Red. Blue enhances Limitless, allowing the user to annihilate enormous objects without expending much effort. Red, on the other hand, produces considerably more energy, but the technique relies on reverse cursed energy. Gojo has managed to create a combination of these two techniques called Hollow Technique: Purple. Limitless is also the basis for Unlimited Void, Gojo's Domain Expansion.

The only drawback with Limitless is that one must also possess the Six Eyes technique in order to use it. The latter grants an individual extraordinary ocular perception, which allows Gojo clan members to perceive the flow of cursed energy in fine detail. More importantly, Satoru can easily view anything from a great distance, as well as resolve them as independent objects. The Six Eyes is extremely powerful, but the ability itself cannot be activated or deactivated. In other words, it is always on at all times.

All things considered, multiple Gojo clan members with the Six Eyes cannot exist simultaneously. Since the Six Eyes causes the user's eyes to function in high resolution like a camera, they must be covered with sunglasses or a blindfold to reduce the drawbacks. Gojo Satoru is said to be the first sorcerer within the clan to possess both Limitless and Six Eyes in the last four centuries.

Jujutsu Kaisen's Kamo Family Relies On Blood Manipulation

Jujutsu Kaisen's Kamo Family values the blood ties between members and strives to ensure that their cursed technique, Blood Manipulation, is passed down. Kamo Noritoshi was born to a mistress of the Kamo Family's head. Since he inherited the Blood Manipulation technique and the family head's wife never had a son who did, Noritoshi was designated to be the clan's next heir. As a third-year student at Kyoto Jujutsu High, Noritoshi's semi-grade 1 sorcerer status made him one of the strongest characters in the series. He is often tasked with advanced missions, which give him a certain level of authority over his subordinates.

Known Members of the Kamo Family

There's a certain villainous character responsible for a lot of the Kamo clan's suffering — but the anime has yet to catch up to this point. In the past, a member of the Kamo Family sullied the clan's name, causing a strain on their relationship with the Gojo and Zenin families. Over 100 years ago, "Noritoshi Kamo" performed experiments on humans and cursed spirits, which created the technique Cursed Womb: Death Paintings. The three known paintings are Choso, Eso, and Keichizu — and Choso inherited the Kamo Family's Blood Manipulation.

Blood Manipulation works almost exactly as it sounds. The wielder can sculpt the blood flowing in their bodies into numerous shapes and structures, creating weapons, projectiles, or other battle props. Further, anyone using this technique can also alter the physical composition of their blood, which further allows them to change their core temperature. Interestingly, cursed spirits are notably weak against a Blood Manipulation wielder's blood, making this ability all the more useful for combat.

The Zenin Family Rejects Those Who Can't Use Jutsu

Above all else, the Zenin Family prioritizes having its members possess powerful cursed techniques and would even reject members who couldn't use jujutsu. In fact, they even rejected someone as strong as Toji Zenin, forcing him to abandon the family and later take his wife's name. The head of the family, Zenin Naobito, has also openly criticized Mai and Maki for not being powerful sorcerers. Maki received most of the backlash since she could not even see cursed spirits without the aid of her glasses, and the constant torment caused her to leave the family. And yet, she has proven to be stronger than her sister on several occasions.

Known Members of the Zenin Family

In some cases, the Zenin Family was willing to buy members who possessed the desired technique back into the clan. Toji Fushiguro originally planned to sell Megumi to the Zenin Family because his son was at the age where his cursed techniques would develop. Maki and Megumi push for a more progressive approach to change the old ideals held by the more conservative members. The fight for dominance has caused a divide and an internal family struggle, where individuals fight over political power. There are around ten known individuals associated with the Zenin family, of whom only half have been introduced in the anime.

Zenin family members are expected to inherit the Ten Shadows technique, as used by Megumi Fushiguro. As such, the user can manifest ten different entities known as Shikigami. In the Jujutsu Kaisen anime, Megumi has been seen relying on Divine Dogs, Nue, Toad, Great Serpent, and Max Elephant. The remaining Shikigami are Rabbit Escape, Round Deer, Piercing Ox, and an extremely overpowered being known as Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga. Megumi can also combine his Shikigami in innumerable ways, greatly expanding his potential arsenal.
