One Piece May Have Revealed Jewelry Bonney's Mother

Chapter 1095 of One Piece, “Better Off Dead In This World,” had several revelations. It alluded to St. Jaygarcia Saturn’s immortality, revealed Bartholomew Kuma’s Buccaneer heritage and life as a Celestial Dragon slave, showed Garling Figarland as a young man, set up the famous God Valley Incident (potentially), and showed how Kuma was introduced to Emporio Ivankov. However, these are all about things fans already had a clue about. Beyond this, one new mystery character was introduced as Ivankov’s sister. Her name is Ginny.

It may be too early to conclude anything about Ginny, but she may have a familial relationship with Jewelry Bonney. This child could grow up to be Kuma’s future wife and the Big Eater’s mother. Besides broadening the Supernova’s backstory, it would confirm she’s the former Warlord’s biological daughter rather than an adoptive one; between this and the reveal of Kuma’s “special race,” this could have far-reaching consequences for the ongoing story. Of course, this depends on who Ginny is supposed to be and whether she survives past this flashback.

How Could Ginny Be Bonney's Mother?

Ginny eating a meaty drumstick could be part of her connection to Bonney. It could represent the slave girl's gluttony, which she would share with the Big Eater of the Worst Generation. It's also worth noting both of these characters debuted in the manga indulging themselves with food. These two girls also share a similar naming pattern. In Japanese, the difference between Bonney's name (ボニー) and Ginny's (ジニー) is only the first kana. The same thing happens between Bonney and her alter ego, Conney (コニー). This could be a pattern among these characters.

Of course, this similarity gets trickier to justify when accounting for full names. Bonney's full name is Jewelry Bonney. Ginny's full name isn't confirmed yet, but she claims Emporio Ivankov is her sibling; they may share a last name. Then again, if last names mattered, Bonney might have taken that of her father, Bartholomew Kuma. That said, Ivankov's involvement could explain Kuma and Ginny's connection. The Okama King and the Sorbet Kingdom's future Tyrant eventually became comrades in the Revolutionary Army, though the encounter in Chapter 1095 is likely where they met. It would make sense for him to approve of such an old friend marrying his sister.

The age range is also just right for these two. Kuma could likely find another girl around his age to conceive Bonney, but Ginny makes a convenient childhood friend. These two have 14 years before Bonney's reported birth, so they have plenty of time to get to know each other. Ginny could be connected to Bonney through their hair color. So far, Ginny's color scheme hasn't been confirmed, nor has any connection to the Big Eater. However, if she's revealed to have pink hair before she's declared Bonney's mother, it could be taken as mounting evidence. It's similar to young Shanks resembling Garling Figarland – implying a father-son relationship.

How Would This Change the Story?

Kuma and Ginny, being Bonney’s parents, could change everything. It would confirm that Kuma and Bonney are father and child by blood rather than adoption. This would mean Bonney has the Buccaneer tribe’s blood flowing through her like her father. Of course, the significance of this tribe hasn’t yet been confirmed. Saturn mentioned Kuma was the last surviving member of this tribe, and that they were responsible for committing a grave sin. Some fans have noted how Zunesha was similarly condemned for a vague sin a long time ago.

Emporio Ivanov also dropped a hint about Kuma’s race. He mentioned how they have the blood of giants in them, though it’s unclear how that’s relevant. Fans have speculated that giants will play an integral role in One Piece’s overarching story, but nobody knows what it is yet; this new race that shares their properties only confounds the issue. The Buccaneers must have unique properties that set them apart from other species, including the giants. It could even be something integral to helping topple the World Government. If something happens to Kuma, Bonney may have to take on whatever duty he would have been responsible for.

However, if this race is such a threat, the World Government’s approach to them doesn’t make sense. When they found Kuma’s family, it might have been prudent for them to wipe out the last of the Buccaneers while they could. Additionally, St. Saturn considered Bonney negligible despite her blood relation to Kuma. The Buccaneers’ ability may have been dormant in the family for generations, which is why the World Government stopped perceiving it as a threat; this would match their approach to the Gum-Gum Fruit and its potential awakening. If Bonney somehow unlocks the powers of her ancestors, the World Government could make hunting her a top priority.

What Else Could Ginny Be?

Of course, there’s always the possibility Ginny has no blood relation to Bonney. This would leave the Big Eater’s origins a mystery. She could still be Luma’s biological daughter, but her mother could be someone else entirely. Even if Ginny isn’t related to Bonney, she could still be influential in the world of One Piece. She’s still Ivankov’s sister and will likely go on to befriend Kuma. Even if she has nothing to do with the future Supernova, she should still play a role in Ivankov and Kuma’s character arcs. She may have even joined the Revolutionary Army with them. It’s also likely that something tragic happened to Ginny. This would explain why she never appeared in the ongoing story. Ivankov and Kuma may have avoided talking about her due to the pain.

If Ginny is gone, Bonney has one of three reasons not to mention her: Ginny died too early in Bonney’s life for them to get to know each other; this could be true regardless of their relationship or Ginny was also killed by the World Government and Bonney needs to avenge her, too – given how many times the Big Eater has talked about Kuma without mentioning Ginny, this is the least likely possibility. It's also possible Ginny is alive and Bonney doesn’t have to worry about her; again, this would remain true regardless of their relationship. If Ginny is alive, she could show up again by the end of the Egghead Arc. Alternatively, she could be presumed dead like Sabo and show up much later. If she is Bonney’s mother, it might be nice to see them (and Kuma) reunited as a happy family.
