One Piece 1097 Stuns Ginny-Bonney Theorists

The One Piece fandom thought they had Ginny's story figured out. Her relationship with Bartholomew Kuma, established in Chapter 1096, "Kumachi," led many to believe she would be the future Warlord's future wife. This, combined with her healthy appetite, would make her a shoo-in to become Jewelry Bonney's biological mother. However, Chapter 1097, "Ginny," makes the story a little more complicated than that. It suggests that these two neither wed nor conceived Bonney in the ideal time frame. Furthermore, the chapter ends on a cliffhanger that many fans have concluded will lead to a tragic fate that will make having Bonney impossible.

These updates to Kuma's backstory have compelled fans to reconsider Bonney's origins. Even the assumption she was adopted isn't as concrete with Ginny present in the lore. The new objective for fans is to theorize on a backstory incorporating all three characters. Some theories also involve others relevant to Kuma's backstory, especially Dr. Vegapunk. Finding out what happened to Ginny, how Bonney was born, and what Kuma had to do with it should be important for figuring out how the latter two's stories will unfold from the Egghead Arc onward. If Ginny is still a part of it, that could also be nice.

Can Ginny Be Bonney's Mother?

Bonney is estimated to be around 24 years old. Of course, her age can only be given as an estimation, since she regularly makes herself as old or as young as she wants. Regardless, this estimation suggests Ginny must have given birth to Bonney no less than 24 years before the present. Chapter 1097 almost covered what should have been the time Bonney was born. This chapter sets the clock 30 years back and shows Kuma and Ginny at various points in their lives. Most notably, there's a point from 25 years ago when Ginny tries convincing Kuma to marry her. If she had gotten her way, there would have been little question left that Ginny was Bonney's mother.

However, Kuma had his objections to starting a family with Ginny. The Buccaneer feared his wife and child would be subjected to a life of suffering like he and his mother were. If he and Ginny married and had a kid despite those concerns, it wasn't revealed. Chapter 1097 skipped the 24-year mark and moved straight to 22 years ago. Kuma and Ginny were enslaved by the Sorbet Kingdom, freed by Dragon, and became Revolutionaries. The Chapter ended with Ginny's capture 14 years before the start of the story; fans expect her to meet her demise by the next chapter.

There are no indications that Kuma and Ginny got married or had a child anywhere in this time frame. The lack of Bonney and Ginny's disappearance has led fans to conclude that the latter will have died before conceiving the former. If these two were mother and daughter, there shouldn't have been any reason to skip what should have been Bonney's birth in Chapter 1097. The only other way for this to happen is if Ginny survives and has Bonney with Kuma Later; this may contradict Bonney's estimated 24 years of age, but it would align with theories about Bonney being a child.

Where Could Bonney Have Come From?

Fans have compiled several backup theories if Ginny dies without giving birth to Bonney. The easiest one would be to revert to the theory that Kuma adopted Bonney when he was Revolutionary. This would realign her backstory with what was revealed in Chapter 1063, "My Only Family;" she said Kuma was the only family she had left and recalled seeing him in (what looks like) his Revolutionary Army cloak when she was a little girl. Now that it's nearly confirmed Kuma became a Revolutionary before making Bonney his daughter, Chapter 1063's flashback could come off as their first meeting.

The adoption theory doesn't contradict Bonney's resemblance to Ginny (at least not yet). Even if they aren't related by blood, Bonney could have inherited her love of food, snappy attitude, and other traits from Ginny by living with her. It only means they can't look alike, and that's arguably the case already; it depends on what color hair and eyes Ginny will be given (fan artists have been assigning her Bonney's colors, but that could change in official art). Ginny being in Bonney's life would also explain why she described Kuma as the only family she had left. This statement implies others were part of her family but disappeared for whatever reason.

She either knew her biological parents or remembers Ginny acting as her mother (or both). Another theory suggests Bonney is Ginny's clone rather than her daughter. Assuming Ginny died before she and Kuma could have a baby, the latter might have taken what he could salvage of her to Egghead so his friend Dr. Vegapunk could fulfill the dream as best as he could. This would explain Bonney's undisclosed history on the island and with the scientist.

It would also mean Bonney inherited her personality traits through genetics rather than proxy. On another note, fans have also pointed out Ginny's resemblance to Dr. Vegapunk's female Satellites (especially Atlas). This could mean he knew Ginny personally before making Bonney. He might have offered to make the girl for Kuma after whatever happened to Ginny. He may have modeled his Satellites after her as a more personal memento.

What New Ginny Theories Are Fans Coming Up With?

Some theorists have suggested that Ginny is Bonney with her memories wiped and her age altered. She could have been turned into a baby by her Devil Fruit and lost her memories in the process. The physical changes to her appearance might be because of her Distorted Future ability.

There are also theories that Kuma expelled Ginny's memories because of something painful. He might have taken those painful memories into himself; Chapter 1097 shows how prone he is to this agonizing altruism. This could explain why Bonney saw "Kuma's" memories in Chapter 1074, "MK. III," from a third-person perspective; they could have been Ginny's memories mixed in with Kuma's (Chapter 1095, "Better Off Dead in This World, revealed she was in that scene).

The only thing that can be said about Ginny's fate is that she's gone now. If she were still around, Bonney wouldn't be calling Kuma her only family; Ginny would have likely been there as a mother figure if she could. Whether she was killed and cloned or reborn as Bonney, fans shouldn't expect to see her again in the present.
