One Piece Film: Red Beats Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke on All-Time Box Office List

One Piece Film: Red has become the 7th highest-grossing Japanese film of all time.

Box office tracker Kogyo Tsushin revealed that One Piece Film: Red has now passed Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke with 20.27 billion yen (US$133.6 million) as of Nov. 12, 2023. Princess Mononoke currently stands at 20.18 billion ($133 million). Film: Red initially ended its box office run just shy of the 20 billion mark on Jan. 29, 2023, with 19.7 billion, but recent re-screenings mean the movie now chases Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which sits at 20.3 billion.

The only other currently screening films to make Kogyo's top 100 on the all-time list are Top Gun: Maverick in 20th with 13.74 billion and another Studio Ghibli film, The Boy and the Heron, at 73rd with 8.54 billion. It's expected that The Boy and the Heron will continue to climb quickly as it carries on with its international rollout. The North American release is slated for Dec. 8, 2023, with the latest trailer featuring an ensemble English dub cast of Robert Pattinson, Christian Bale, Florence Pugh and more. The full Japanese top 10 all-time box office list in order is: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, Spirited Away, Titanic, Frozen, Your Name, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, One Piece Film: Red, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle and Bayside Shakedown 2.

Directed by Goro Taniguchi with screenplay by Tsutomu Kuroiwa, One Piece Film: Red was released to critical acclaim in Japan on Aug. 6, 2022. The movie took an unconventional approach with its musical-heavy theme and the mysterious introduction of the lead character, Uta, which led many to question how canon Film: Red actually is. A review by CBR praises its great musical set pieces but describes the movie overall as a "mixed bag that obscures its strengths with oversaturated pop music and blinding lights" and "is hardly required watching for more casual fans or curious viewers about the franchise."

Crunchyroll streams One Piece Film: Red, which is officially described as follows: "Uta—the most beloved singer in the world whose voice has been described as 'otherworldly'—is renowned for concealing her own identity when performing. Now, for the first time ever, she will reveal herself to the world at a live concert. With the Navy watching closely, the venue fills with Uta's fans—including excited pirates and the Straw Hats led by Luffy, who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance—all eagerly awaiting the voice that the whole world has been waiting for to resound. The story begins with the shocking revelation that she is the enigmatic Shanks' daughter."
