Year-Long Dragon Ball Fan Production Featuring Goku Fighting Broly Goes Viral

A fan-animated Dragon Ball video of Goku sparring against the Legendary Super Saiyan Broly is going viral on YouTube.

Eduardo Quintana, an animation supervisor at Sola Digital Arts, uploaded the popular Dragon Ball fan animation on his personal YouTube page. The short is under two minutes long but features such high-quality animation that it could easily be mistaken as the real deal from Toei, the official anime studio of the Dragon Ball franchise. According to Quintana, the fan-made short took him 14 months to complete using the software programs Toon Boom Harmony, Autodesk Maya and Audacity.

Titled Dragon Ball Saisen - The Animated Manga, Quintana's viral video takes place within the realm of the 2018 theatrical anime movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The film begins with Whis officiating a match between Goku and Broly after training together for so long, told through a motion comic presentation. Once the match begins, the film transitions away from its manga paneling to a fully animated brawl between the powerful Saiyan warriors.

During the battle, Broly nearly loses his cool after a punch from Goku scratches his face. However, after remembering the happy memories he made with Goku and his friends, Broly is able to revert from his Hulk-like transformation and settle into a controlled Super Saiyan version of himself. Currently, the fan-animated Dragon Ball video has earned over 60,000 views since its release on Nov. 7.

Since his introduction in the 1993 anime movie Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly has become a fan-favorite character in the Dragon Ball universe. His popularity spurred two more animated films: Dragon Ball Z: Broly – Second Coming and Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly. Both films were released in 1994. Dragon Ball Super: Broly reintroduces the Legendary Super Saiyan into the series' official canon while picking up where the Dragon Ball Super TV series left off. Takao Koyama is credited as the creator of Broly, while Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama is responsible for the design.

Dragon Ball: The Breakers Season 4 recently introduced Broly as a Raider character during its one-year anniversary. The online asymmetrical multiplayer game is available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC. Publisher Bandai Namco is also behind other anime games like My Hero Ultra Rumble and Jujutsu Kaisen Cursed Clash.
