10 Things You Didn't Know About Nami In One Piece

Nami has been a part of One Piece since the very beginning, and she is without a doubt one of the series' best female characters. She is the navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates, and she uses her skills to guide their ship through the Grand Line. Hardcore One Piece fans believe they know everything about Nami, but there is a good chance they do not know everything.

For example, many One Piece fans probably do not know that her favorite type of weather is summer-type conditions on a spring island. There is also a high chance most fans do not know that the bracelet on her arm was a gift from her adopted sister. There are, of course, other interesting facts about Nami that fans may not know about.

10 She Is One Of The Smartest Characters In One Piece

Nami is undoubtedly one of the most attarctive characters in One Piece, but she also happens to be one of the series' smartest characters. She is arguably the best navigator and cartographer in One Piece, and she has had these skills since she was a child. She has a great deal of weather knowledge, and she uses that knowledge to her advantage during combat.

She also manages the entire crew's finances because she has a great financial mindset. According to One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda, Nami possesses the third highest IQ in the series. Oda has not given an official IQ number, but he insists that Nami is the third smartest character. Only Benn Beckman of the Red Hair Pirates and Captain Kuro of the Black Cat Pirates have higher IQs.

9 Nami Is The Only Other Straw Hat Who Has Invited Someone To Join The Crew

Most of the Straw Hats joined the crew because Luffy invited them. Luffy is the captain, so it makes sense for him to hold such power and responsibility. During the Drum Island arc however, it was Nami who first asked Tony Tony Chopper to become the crew's doctor. This was the first and only time that a Straw Hat other than Luffy invited someone to the crew.

She learned that Chopper was a reindeer who ate the Human-Human Fruit, and she learned that he cared about her health. He actually helped to save her from a near-fatal disease. Chopper may have rejected Nami's initial offer, but he eventually joined the crew because they were both accepting and adventurous.

8 She Originally Wielded A Different Weapon

When Nami first joined the crew, she wielded a three-sectioned bo-staff with a fair amount of skill. During the Arabasta Saga, Usopp invented a new bo-staff for Nami called the Clima-Tact - which gives her the ability to manipulate the climate. It has received several upgrades since the timeskip, and it has now become a sentient weapon because of the Zeus Homie.

The Clima-Tact is Nami's signature weapon, but when Oda initially designed her, she wielded a battle ax instead. If Oda had stuck with this idea, Nami would have become more of a melee fighter. Luckily, Oda went the Clima-Tact route, and Nami was able to develop a unique fighting style.

7 Some Of Her Outfits Foreshadowed Other Characters

Before entering the Grand Line, the Straw Hat Pirates stopped at Loguetown to resupply, but Nami also used this opportunity to go on a little shopping spree. Nami got several outfits, but two of those outfits really stand out because they were seemingly used to foreshadow two other prominent female pirates.

The first outfit is almost identical to the clothes that Nico Robin wears in Arabasta. Robin joins the crew after the Arabasta arc, and she becomes one of Luffy's most loyal friends. Nami also wears an elegant red dress with an animal scarf. This dress and the pose that Nami uses actually foreshadows Boa Hancock - the former Warlord of the Sea who falls in love with Luffy.

6 There Is A Reason Why Nami Can Hurt Luffy With Normal Punches

Nami can fight if she needs to, and she can deal a good amount of damage with her Clima-Tact. In terms of overall strength though, Nami is one of the weakest Straw Hats, and she does not seem to possess any type of Haki. That being said, she is one of the few people who can injure Luffy with a normal punch.

Nami tends to punch Luffy whenever he does something really stupid, or when he is about to do something idiotic. This implies that Luffy only sustains these injures for comedic effect, which is partly true. A One Piece fan asked Oda about these injuries during a Q&A, and he stated that Nami is able to hurt him because she is technically beating up Luffy's spirit.

5 There Is A Reason Why Her Wanted Poster Looks Different

10 Things You Didn't Know About Nami In One Piece

In One Piece, every notable pirate has a bounty that is displayed on their wanted poster. According to Nami's current wanted poster, her bounty now stands at 366,000,000 million Berries. In most cases, a wanted poster includes a recent picture of the pirate, but the picture is usually a random snapshot.

In Nami's case though, her wanted posters feature pictures where she is actively posing for the camera like a model. A fan once asked Oda why Nami's posters look different, and he stated that the person taking the picture asked Nami to pose because he wanted to put her on the cover of his magazine.

4 Eiichiro Oda Married A Real-Life Nami

One Piece fans like to ship characters together. In fact, many fans believe that Nami and Luffy should be in a relationship. Unfortunately, Eiichiro Oda has stated that he does not plan to introduce a Straw Hat romance because romance is not the kind of thing shonen fans want to see. He only mentioned this because a fan asked him who Nami is in love with.

Ironically, Oda should have said that Nami loves him because he is married to a real-life Nami. In 2003, Oda attended a live-action One Piece musical at Jump Festa, and he met Chiaki Inaba - the actress who played Nami. They got married in 2004 and have had two daughters. They are still married.

3 If She Were Real, Nami Would Be Working With Children

Given her navigation and cartography skills, Nami could easily be a real-life naval officer. She could also realistically use her weather expertise to become a meteorologist. According to Oda however, Nami would have a very different type of job is she was a real person.

Nami would likely be a childcare worker in Sweden if she were in the real world. Based on her personality, Nami is not the most nurturing person, but she has always had a soft spot for children. This was shown on Punk Hazard when she helped to save children who were being mistreated by Caesar Clown. She was also very protective of Momonosuke when he was a child.

2 Nami Would Have A Logia-Type Devil Fruit

Nami does not have a Devil Fruit, but if she did have one, it would be the Rumble-Rumble Fruit. One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda revealed this interesting tidbit during a manga Q&A session. He also revealed the potential Devil Fruits for other Straw Hats like Zoro and Jinbe.

The Rumble-Rumble Fruit is a Logia-type Devil Fruit that would give Nami the ability to create and manipulate lightning. Her body would also be immune to most non-Haki attacks because she would be able to turn her body into lightning at any time. At full power, this Logia can destroy an entire island. Given Nami's fondness for lightning attacks, the Rumble-Rumble Fruit would be a perfect fit.

1 There Were Two Proto-Type Versions Of Nami

Nami is one of One Piece's most iconic characters, but Oda initially created two other female characters to fill her role. One of these characters was named Silk, and unlike Nami, she was supposed to be kind and gentle. Their backstories were a bit similar because Silk's parents were killed by pirates, and she is then taken in by some villagers.

The other character was named Ann - who actually appears in the second version of the manga's debut chapter. Ann's backstory was a bit different, but her personality was more in line with Nami's. Oda ultimately went with Nami, but Silk and Ann still appear in the anime.
