Chainsaw Man Author Reveals His New Favorite Manga

Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto has revealed his newest manga recommendation on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Posted under his social media alias of Nagayama Koharu, Fujimoto gave his brief thoughts on a new manga series he's been reading. "Tower Dungeon was fun, so I recommend it," Fujimoto said. Tower Dungeon is a manga written and illustrated by Tsutomu Nihei, the Japanese manga artist behind Blame!, Wolverine: Snikt! and Knights of Sidonia.

The Plot of the Tower Dungeon Fantasy Manga Series

First published in Monthly Shonen Sirius on October 2023, Tower Dungeon is a "hack-and-slash fantasy" series that follows a simple farmer on an epic journey. An evil necromancer assassinates the king and kidnaps the princess, taking her to the gigantic "Dragon's Tower" that recently fell from the sky. The king's men try and fail to traverse the intimidating tower. However, a farmer named Yuva who was hired to dig graves for the fallen men is recruited for the rescue mission based on his unusual superhuman strength. Tower Dungeon is currently ongoing, with an English release date yet to be announced.

Fujimoto has never been shy about sharing his taste in anime and manga, even when his picks go against mainstream preference. Last December, Fujimoto revealed his favorite pieces of media from 2023. The list included popular titles like Godzilla Minus One, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. However, his favorite anime series from 2023 was FLCL: Shoegaze -- a somewhat controversial choice, as the reception towards the FLCL anime sequels for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block has been polarizing at best.

Tower Dungeon Shares Some Interesting Parallels With FLCL: Shoegaze

Unfortunately, Fujimoto didn't go into detail as to why FLCL: Shoegaze resonated so strongly with him. However, Production I.G. USA president Maki Terashima-Furuta took notice of Fujimoto's recommendation and thanked him for his support, as did Jason DeMarco, the Senior Vice President of Anime & Action Series at Warner Bros. Discovery. Interestingly, FLCL: Shoegaze shares some similarities with Tower Dungeon, as the anime follows two peculiar high school students ascending a mysterious structure known as the Tsuganei Tower.

Chainsaw Man fans specifically also have plenty to look forward to. An anime movie based on the "Reze Arc" ("Bomb Girl" arc) is currently in production by studio MAPPA, while an anime movie adaptation of Fujimoto's emotional stand-alone story Look Back is likewise in the works. Finally, the ongoing Chainsaw Man manga continues its escalation of action and drama with every new chapter release.
