Naruto: The 9 Tailed Beasts, Ranked From Weakest To Strongest

The Naruto series features plenty of powerful ninja and jutsu, but the strongest weapon used by far is none other than the Tailed Beasts. These mystical entities were originally created by the Sage of Six Paths himself. Although they are collectively called the Tailed-Beasts, or the more derogatory Chakra Beasts, they are massive chakra forms that can do enormous damage. As such, they are very handy in a fight, even if they are difficult to control at the beginning.

The Tailed-Beasts have been captured, placed into humans, and extracted various times throughout the anime as a tool in powerplay. At the same time, they do each have personalities, as well as several tails or some other feature, that can be used to classify them. All things considered, some of the Tailed Beasts are naturally going to be stronger than others.

Updated on April 23, 2024, by Ajay Aravind: The Tailed Beasts are some of the strongest beings in the Naruto franchise, having originated from the Ten-Tails itself. Although there are clear differences in power between them, it's clear that each Tailed Beast is unique. As such, we've updated this article with some more relevant information.

9 Shukaku Is The Reason Why Gaara Has Ultimate Defense

The One-Tailed Beast

Shukaku is the One-Tails who resides inside Gaara. Besides Kurama, Shukaku is one of the first Tailed Beasts introduced in Naruto. Gaara's powerful defenses are a direct result of Shukaku's chakra. The One-Tails behaves as though intoxicated at any given time, while simultaneously projecting a rather arrogant view of itself.

It also has no qualms when it comes to murdering people, including innocents, although this is largely due to human mistreatment. The One-Tails is famous for using Sand Manipulation, especially considering it's composed of sand entirely. As such, it can take damage without suffering the consequences. Most importantly, Shukaku has advanced sealing techniques that far outrank the other Tailed Beasts, despite technically being considered the weakest on this list.

8 Matatabi Is A Bit Different From Her Tailed Brethren

The Two-Tailed Beast

Matatabi is the Two-Tails who resides within the deceased Hidden Cloud Village kunoichi, Yugito Nii. She has Fire Release, which she can lend to other Tailed Beasts. She can also fuse with other Tailed Beasts, which allows her to crush a full Susanoo. She is also the fastest out of all other Tailed Beasts and can outrun most humans who wish to capture her.

Although Matatabi is ultimately caught, it takes a lot more effort to finally extract her from Yugito. Interestingly, Matatabi doesn't act like her oft-reckless comrades; on the contrary, she treats most people with genuine respect and dignity. The Two-Tails possesses an incomprehensible amount of chakra, not to mention its overwhelming physical strength that can effortlessly decimate most opponents.

7 Isobu Is Probably Stronger Than The Other Tailed Beasts In Water

The Three-Tailed Beast

The Three-Tailed Beast is surprisingly docile, but that doesn't make it any less powerful. Isobu is the Three-Tails who resides inside the deceased Fourth Mizukage, Yagura Karatachi. Isobu is capable of defeating its opponents with nothing more than sea coral, as well as swimming at ridiculously fast speeds that outpace pretty much anything else in the water.

In its preferred aquatic environment, Isobu would surely win a battle between all the Tailed Beasts; that said, it would probably lose most terrestrial matches. In any case, Isobu has enough chakra to wreak widespread havoc and destruction, although this outcome is quite unlikely. The anime version of the Three-Tails has access to devastating water-based attacks, as well as a strangely psychedelic fog that can confuse opponents.

6 Son Goku Is Based On The Legendary Monkey King

The Four-Tailed Beast

Son Goku is the Four-Tails who resides within the deceased Hidden Stone Village ninja, Roshi. Along with being able to create a Tailed Beast Bomb, Son Goku knows how to use taijutsu, a rather potent martial technique. Based on the legendary Monkey King from Journey to the West, the Four Tails is physically overpowered.

Like Shukaku, Son Goku also can't stand human beings for justifiable reasons but behaves honorably when it comes to the other Tailed Beasts. The Four-Tails boasts an exceptional level of physical power, but its most notable technique has to be Lava Release, a combination of Earth and Fire Release. This entity's name is also an oblique reference to the iconic protagonist of Dragon Ball, something most Naruto fans would have picked up instantly.

5 Kokuo May Have The Strongest Willpower

The Five-Tailed Beast

Naruto: The 9 Tailed Beasts, Ranked From Weakest To Strongest

A horse-dolphin hybrid, Kokuo is the Five-Tails who resides inside the deceased Hidden Stone Village Ninja, Han. At the end of the Ninja War, Kokuo decides to live in a forest to avoid any conflicts. As one of the strongest Tailed Beasts, Kokuo uses its horn to ram its enemies, as seen during the skirmish with Gyuuki.

Further, the Five-Tails is known for wielding several Nature Transformation techniques. Given that it temporarily delays Tobi's attempts to manipulate it, Kokuo's willpower and determination can be correctly described as unparalleled by the other Tailed Beasts. Similar to Son Goku, Kokuo has the ability to blend Fire and Water releases to generate a technique known as Boil Release. That said, it's nowhere near the strongest Tailed Beasts on this list.

4 Saiken Is Slow-Moving But Exceptionally Durable

The Six-Tailed Beast

Naruto: The 9 Tailed Beasts, Ranked From Weakest To Strongest

Saiken is the Six-Tails who resides inside the deceased Hidden Mist Ninja, Utakata. This entity resembles a gigantic slug capable of using Water Release. Saiken also shares its chakra with other Tailed Beasts, a rather nifty ability. Further, Saiken is capable of trapping its enemies by relying on a technique known as Water Release: Starch Syrup Capturing Field.

The Six-Tails can also withstand being thrown around by other Tailed Beasts; it emerges unscathed even after being tossed by Kurama. Although slow in comparison to other Tailed Beasts, Saiken's exceptional durability is no joke. The Six-Tails can also produce a highly caustic substance that can effectively dissolve the opponent. Although not shown in the manga, Saiken exploits Soap Bubble Ninjutsu in the anime.

3 Chomei Has The Ability To Fly And Produce A Potent Mist

The Seven-Tailed Beast

Naruto: The 9 Tailed Beasts, Ranked From Weakest To Strongest

Chomei is the Seven-Tails who resides within the deceased Village Hidden by a Waterfall kunoichi, Fu. Chomei and Fu were friends before her death—a surprisingly common occurrence between Tailed Beasts and humans. Chomei can use its wings to blind others with a potent mist, as well as create a Cocoon that can slow down Chakra Absorption Jutsu.

The anime series depicts a fitter variant of this Cocoon, capable of hampering Chakra Absorption. Although Chomei usually uses jutsu which is based on insects, it also has immense durability and stamina. The main advantage Chomei has over its comrades is that it can fly through the air with ease. Although its range of techniques is smaller than the other Tailed Beasts, the Seven-Tails can clearly hold its own in a battle of strength.

2 Gyuki Can Dispel Amaterasu With Its Bare Fists

The Eight-Tailed Beast

Gyuki is the Eight-Tails who resides inside Killer B. In addition to its spiritual powers, it can also use its various octopus tails to deal tons of damage. Further, Gyuki can also agitate B's chakra and expel any genjutsu, with the singular exception of the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Gyuki's full strength is displayed during Sasuke's battle with Killer B, as the Eight-Tails can dispel Amaterasu with its bare fists.

If conquering Amaterasu with its bare hands isn't impressive enough, Gyuki can also overwhelm two Tailed Beasts at once without expending much effort. As the only Tailed Beast tamed by B, Gyuki and Kurama share many similarities. Second only to Kurama, the Eight-Tails is considered a highly dangerous combatant, even by those as strong as the Third and Fourth Raikage.

1 Kurama Started Out As An Enemy, But Became One Of Naruto's Best Friends

The Nine-Tailed Beast

Kurama is the Nine-Tailed Beast who resides within Naruto. Kurama was initially feared not only because he destroyed the Hidden Leaf Village, but because he is the strongest Tailed Beast. In fact, Hashirama Senju himself believed that the Nine-Tails should not be allowed to roam free. That said, the Ten-Tails is vastly more powerful. Not only can Kurama kill others with a single fingernail, but he can create a barrage of Tailed Beast Bombs and cause immense destruction.

The Nine-Tails can generate a radical form of energy by utilizing a technique called Baryon Mode. Kurama is also the smartest of all Tailed Beasts in Naruto, as shown through his knowledge and comprehension of nuclear physics. All things considered, there's no doubt that Kurama is the strongest Tailed Beast on this list as well as in the Naruto franchise.
