"Sailor Warlords": Sailor Moon Cosplay Gets Epic One Piece Mashup

Two iconic anime franchises, Sailor Moon and One Piece, inspired avid cosplayers dubbing themselves the 'Sailor Warlords,' gracing 2024's Katsucon anime convention in an epic costume mashup of both properties.

Pikaswoosh posted the Katsucon cosplay on her Instagram account, which features the creative mashup of Sailor Moon and One Piece-inspired costumes. The cosplayer explained how the idea for the collaborative mashup came about. "Sailor Warlords. OMG, I finally got some friends to do a group Sailor Moon mashup with. I did my Sailor Doflamingo last year at AX (now improved) and was able to connect with @mistabunni when she tagged me in a One Piece mashup she did for another con," Pikaswoosh wrote. "We then started tentatively planning a group cosplay together for Katsu! I'm so happy my girlies @tori_plays and @mixedclover were able to join, and everyone killed it," the cosplayer added.

The Backgrounds and Plots of the Iconic Sailor Moon and One Piece

Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon manga was serialized in Kodansha's shojo manga magazine Nakayoshi from 1991 to 1997. The 60 individual chapters were later reorganized into 52 and compiled into 18 volumes, along with several side stories. Sailor Moon follows the adventures of a schoolgirl named Usagi Tsukino as she transforms into the eponymous character to search for a magical artifact, the Legendary Silver Crystal. Usagi leads the Sailor Guardians as they battle against villains to prevent the artifact from being stolen and the destruction of the Solar System.

Eiichiro Oda created One Piece, which has been serialized in Shueisha's shonen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump since July 1997, with its individual chapters compiled in 108 standalone volumes as of March 2024. The story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, as he explores the Grand Line in search of the mythical treasure known as the 'One Piece' in order to become the next King of the Pirates. One Piece, much like Sailor Moon, has spawned a global media franchise.

Sailor Moon Debuts New Art Book as One Piece Undergoes Month-Long Hiatus

Sailor Moon recently announced the release of a new art book, SailormoonRaisonné Art Works 1991~2023, which features stunning illustrations by Takeuchi and covers the manga's history since its inception. The 200-page art book will collect 745 illustrations by the franchise creator on its color pages. The book cost US$40 plus shipping. In addition, a deluxe edition of the art book will be released exclusively for official Pretty Guardians fan club members.

One Piece creator Oda has explained why his manga is on a one-month hiatus after it was reported that One Piece would pause publication after the March 25 release of Chapter 1111 in the "Egghead" story arc. "I'm taking a break," Oda stated. "And it'll be three weeks. Because of the news of Toriyama-sensei. So, I've been excessively worried about my health. It's not an illness, BTW. But I wanted to take a break to do some self-maintenance on myself. And maybe take some time to think about what is One Piece. After all, I'm a busy person."
