Tokyo Ghoul Creator Tipped for Anime Comeback

After the huge success of Tokyo Ghoul, fans of creator Sui Ishida's latest series are convinced that he's soon due for an anime comeback thanks to a new announcement on social media.

Ishida's latest title, Choujin X, celebrated the release of Volume 8 on Dec. 19, 2023, by opening a new TikTok account with the announcement that the series was receiving a voice comic. Every Tuesday from Dec. 19 onward, a new installment will be released, with the voice actors behind the five featured characters -- Azuma Higashi, Tokio Kurohara, Batista Hoshi, Ely Otsuda and Chandra Hume -- revealed in turns. Receiving a voice comic is typically a huge step toward receiving an anime adaptation, allowing fans to see the story brought to life in a new way. Choujin X fans quickly turned to voice their excitement on social media, with some reactions shown below.

Ishida built a strong following with the release of the Tokyo Ghoul manga and the subsequent first season of its anime adaptation, which was critically acclaimed for its dark setting and gritty action, making it a big hit among fans of urban fantasy. Similarly, the soundtrack, composed by Yutaka Yamada and headlined by the opening theme "Unravel" by TK from Ling Tosite Sigure, was one of the most well-received in history. However, the anime suffered in future seasons, including the adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul's sequel, Tokyo Ghoul:re, which was heavily criticized for both its animation and overall direction.

While Choujin X contains many similarities to Tokyo Ghoul, the work aims to stand out from its predecessor. Published irregularly in Shueisha's Young Jump Comics imprint since May 2021, the series was praised in a Choujin X review for its art, comedy and memorable characters. Even so, its themes of body horror and finding one's place in the world will undoubtedly sound familiar to fans who are familiar with Ishida's other work.

VIZ licenses the Choujin X manga for North American readers and describes the series: "Being a superpowered creature isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, though. Tokio has to hide his transformation from his family and dodge a truancy charge at school, all while dealing with the increasingly odd incidents happening around town!" Volume 1 was released on Feb. 21, 2023.
