Attack on Titan Prequel Shelved by Official Creator

An Attack on Titan prequel was recently revealed to have been canceled by Hajime Isayama, the manga's official creator, over fears of ruining the series' continuity.

Via X (formerly Twitter), Isayama stated in the new Attack on Titan FLY Artbook that he originally intended to write a prequel, adding that it would "take place 100 years before the main story." He continued, "However, when depicting such a story, if there's even one discrepancy with the main story, it would no longer be a good fit. I'd need a lot of determination to actually draw it, so I didn't make any progress writing it."

Isayama added, "Events at the Angouleme International Comics Festival made me realize that the first priority of this one-shot is to make the fans happy. Therefore, rather than the original idea, I decided to make this a one-shot piece that would reveal something I had said I would draw before but hadn't drawn yet: 'Why does Levi hold a teacup in such a weird way?'" The hypothetical prequel would join Attack on Titan's other prequel manga, Before the Fall, written instead by Ryo Suzukaze with art by Satoshi Shiki. The manga adapts Suzukaze's original light novel with art by THORES Shibamoto.

Attack on Titan's Hajime Isayama Continues to Author New Works

Instead of Isayama's intended prequel, fans received Attack on Titan Volume 35, first announced last year and which centers around Levi. Meanwhile, the broader FLY art book featured numerous artworks and comments from Isayama. Other recent Attack on Titan releases include the limited-edition metal art collection. Meanwhile, Attack on Titan creator Hajime Isayama remains active, supervising a new story alongside Eren's voice actor Yuki Kaji in the one-shot manga series Soyogi Fractal.

While the made-to-order Attack on Titan FLY Artbook is currently no longer available to purchase, fans can relive the manga series through licensor Kodansha USA or watch the anime on Crunchyroll. The latter describes the series: "Known in Japan as Shingeki no Kyojin, many years ago, the last remnants of humanity were forced to retreat behind the towering walls of a fortified city to escape the massive, man-eating Titans that roamed the land outside their fortress. Only the heroic members of the Scouting Legion dared to stray beyond the safety of the walls – but even those brave warriors seldom returned alive. Those within the city clung to the illusion of a peaceful existence until the day that dream was shattered, and their slim chance at survival was reduced to one horrifying choice: kill – or be devoured!"
