It's Time for Dragon Ball Super to End Broly's Training & Give Him Some Real Action

Broly is arguably the Saiyan with the most potential in Dragon Ball Super, with his only real competition being Gohan. Broly's incredible strength made for some of the best fights in the entire series in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and that's to say nothing of his more villainous version from the original Dragon Ball Z films. With Broly being such a popular character, it’s a wonder he hasn't been utilized more in Dragon Ball Super.

Now that he's a member of the Dragon Team, Broly's unmatched potential could make him a vital part in the fight against evil. Unfortunately, he has been relegated to training on Beerus' planet to try to get a hold on his power. While it's perfectly reasonable that Goku and Vegeta would be cautious with Broly considering how things went in their first meeting, Broly has spent long enough out of the action. If the series' next villain is to be taken seriously at all, they'll have to go up against the saiyan with the greatest natural talent, Broly.

Broly Was Kept Out Of The Action For Good Reason

Goku and Vegeta Had Every Reason Not to Trust Broly After Their Initial Meeting

As unfortunate as it has been for Broly fans that the Legendary Super Saiyan was kept out of the action for so long, it ultimately makes sense. Broly's canonical introduction into the series during Dragon Ball Super: Broly presented him as a mindless berserker fueled by blind rage. The angrier he became, the stronger he got, until the point that he was able to fight and defeat both SSJ Blue Goku and Vegeta at the same time. This put him at least at the level of Jiren during the Tournament of Power, which is extremely impressive considering he never had any formal training and never became a Super Saiyan before the fight with Goku.

Broly's pure natural power was far beyond a Super Saiyan God, giving him the greatest potential of any Saiyan, bar-none. In that context, it makes sense that -- when Broly finally began training with Goku and Vegeta -- he would be relegated to the background while he learned to gain control over his power. If Goku and Vegeta hadn't fused into Gotenks to stop him, Broly may very well have accidentally destroyed the entire Universe in his unrestrained anger. It's understandable that Goku and Vegeta would be cautious about having Broly see any real action given the circumstances, but Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103 implied that Broly finally had enough training.

Broly Has Finally Gained Control Over His Powers

At the End of the Super Hero Arc, Broly Was Shown Having Full Control Over His Super Saiyan Form

Broly has been training with Goku and Vegeta on Beerus' planet for quite a while. The Broly Saga was just before the Galatcic Parrol Prisoner Saga, at a time when Goku still didn't even have full control over Ultra Instinct. Apparently, spending all that time training to hone his skills and gain control over his powers only finally paid off 70 chapters later, during the Super Hero arc.

In Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103, Broly was shown sparring with Gohan, who had finally gained control over his own power with his latest Gohan Beast form. What's so special about Gohan Beast is that it represents the innate potential that Gohan was always shown to have since his earliest fights in the Saiyan Saga of DBZ. At that time, it became clear that Gohan's power revolved around his emotions -- a characteristic that makes the nature of his power very similar to Broly's.

During Gohan and Broly's sparring match in Dragon Ball Super, Goku set Broly up to fight Gohan because he recognized this similarity in the two Saiyans' powers. Being that Gohan had gained control and understanding of his own potential, Goku felt that sparring with him might help Broly gain a better understanding of how his own powers worked. However, at the start of their match, it became apparent that Broly was much closer to gaining control over his abilities than ever before.

Broly's newfound control was shown when he went Super Saiyan against Gohan while still maintaining his conscious awareness; an ability he had never displayed in the series before that moment. This was truly the moment Broly had been training for throughout the prior 70 chapters, and his hard work had only finally begun to pay off. With that increased ability to restrain his strength, Broly should finally be ready to join the fight against the saiyans' next great threat, whom many fans expect to be Frieza.

Broly May Have the Greatest Chance Against Black Frieza

Broly is the Z Fighters' One Wild Card Whose True Potential Still Remains Untapped

At the end of the Granolah arc, Frieza made his infamous return as Black Frieza, easily defeating Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta without so much as breaking a sweat. Even though Gohan Beast proved himself to be stronger than UI Goku at the end of Chapter 103 of Super, it's uncertain whether he can actually beat Black Frieza. While Gohan Beast is definitely more powerful than Goku, Black Frieza was so much more powerful than Goku that even Gohan's superior strength may not be enough. Whereas UI Goku was able to put up a fight and even land a few hits on Gohan Beast, Black Frieza completely and utterly defeated both Goku and Vegeta with a single blow, rendering them defenseless against him.

Gohan Beast's true limits are still a mystery, but it was implied at the end of the Super Hero Saga that Gohan had gained control over his innate potential through this new form. If even Gohan's greatest potential isn’t enough to stop Black Frieza, the Z Fighters will need to rely on the one wild card they have left: Broly. Broly is the one saiyan whose limitations and potential are still largely unknown. If Broly was already strong enough to go toe-to-toe with Gogeta after hardly doing any real training of his own, it stands to reason that after training on Beerus' planet with Goku and Vegeta for long enough, he could become far stronger than any of the other Z Fighters. The speed of Broly's growth during combat is unprecedented, and his pure talent without training may only be matched by Frieza himself.

Broly & Gohan Can Take Over For Goku & Vegeta

If There's Any Saiyan Strong Enough to Protect the Earth in Goku's Absence, It's Broly

One of the main reasons Beerus has been so welcoming to Goku and Vegeta training on his planet as of late is the fact that he is looking for a successor to take over his place as God of Destruction somewhere down the line. While Goku and Vegeta aren't strong enough to do that yet, they are certainly far closer than ever before. That said, if one of them were to take over that role, it would certainly leave a hole where the protectors of Universe 7 -- and especially Planet Earth -- used to be. Given Broly's boundless potential and Gohan's newfound power-up, though, the possibility of Goku and Vegeta stepping back from their roles as the World's defenders is much more likely.

As a new Saiyan duo with potentially even greater strength that Goku and Vegeta, Gohan and Broly could push each other to new heights that could even surpass Goku and Vegeta themselves. If anyone were to take over for Goku as the main character, it would obviously have to be Gohan considering he was always meant to become the main character in DBZ. On the other hand, Broly would have never been a character fans thought would be his rival counterpart, with that honor most likely going to Piccolo. After all, Piccolo is the perfect mirror for Gohan in terms of personality, and that likely won’t change.

Broly is far too new of a character with too few moments of screen time in Super to say for certain how his personality would fit with Gohan. However, in terms of raw power, the only hero in the series who could push Gohan to become stronger and test his limits is Broly. The nature of Broly's power is extremely similar to Gohan's, and he seems to have even more room to grow than Gohan himself. Goku's main goal during the Buu Saga was to leave behind the fate of the World to the next generation, and Gohan is the best person to do that. In Broly’s case, he's around the same age as Goku and Vegeta. But in terms of Super Saiyan strength, there's no other warrior in Dragon Ball more fit for the job than Broly.

If the Z Fighters have any hope of taking down Black Frieza, as well as future villains who will inevitably be even stronger than he is, they need someone with potential as great as Broly's. Broly is an underutilized wild card whose full strength -- and personality, for that matter -- has only just begun to be hinted at in Dragon Ball Super. Adding Broly to the roster in the next big battle may be exactly what Dragon Ball Super needs to raise the stakes higher than they've ever been.
