May 9 marks the celebration of Goku Day for Dragon Ball fans worldwide. In honor of the special occasion, the official Dragon Ball website is asking fans to soon vote for their favorite Goku battle from the entire series to date.
In the latest edition of the "Weekly Dragon Ball News," franchise staff announced that the series will be conducting a "Goku’s Best Bout Poll" on Goku’s special day. From the original series to Dragon Ball Super, all battle scenes featuring Goku will be eligible. That’s over 150 battle scenes. Among the candidates are obvious choices, like Goku vs. Frieza and Goku vs. Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z, as well as Goku vs. Jiren from the "Tournament of Power" storyline in Dragon Ball Super. Dragon Ball's Official Best Goku Fight Poll Will Cover the Character's Entire Life to Date
The poll will also include Goku’s entire timeline, meaning his matches as a child are eligible as well. For example, the comical introduction scene of a young Goku defeating a giant fish for food without any clothes can be voted for by fans. Additionally, the poll will include fights from both the anime and manga. This means Goku’s match against Gohan Beast from the Dragon Ball Super manga is acceptable, along with other battles exclusive to the manga. Even kid Goku fighting a tree stump will be up for votes.
Considering the 40-year history of Dragon Ball, fans have an overwhelming amount of Goku battles to choose from. "Victory Uchida," the host of the “Weekly Dragon Ball News” video series and the manga editor for Dragon Ball Super, offered fans his own suggestion for the best Goku battle: Ultra Instinct Goku vs. Moro. The latter character comes from the "Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga" in the Dragon Ball Super manga -- an ancient, goat-like, demonic creature that escaped entrapment, causing chaos across the galaxy. While his appearance is initially weak, Moro’s additional transformations make him so powerful that even the likes of Goku and Vegeta have trouble catching up with him. He’s one of the strongest and cruelest villains in Dragon Ball history.
Dragon Ball Super's "Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga" Is Often Considered the Series' Best Arc
To many readers of the Dragon Ball Super manga, the "Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga" is considered to be the best in the series. Its horror-like approach and dramatic atmosphere are reminiscent of the "Cell Saga" from DBZ. Goku being pushed to the edge forces the Super Saiyan back into a more serious demeanor than the buffoon Super tends to portray him as; the arc also showcases how much Vegeta has grown in terms of power and compassion. However, what fans especially love about Moro’s storyline is how it allows the series’ most neglected characters to finally shine.
This year will be the first time Goku Day is celebrated without Akira Toriyama, the iconic manga author behind Dragon Ball and other beloved franchises. Dragon Ball Daima, the upcoming fall 2024 anime series, is the last Dragon Ball project Toriyama worked on before his passing in March. Dragon Ball Super and other animated TV series and movies in the franchise are available to stream on Crunchyroll.
